It’s time! You have successfully completed Part 2 Written exam, and you are one step closer to achieving your dream of pursuing a medical career in Ireland. Now, you have to prepare for what’s next after the Part 2 Written exam: the MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE/ Clinical exam. This is the final exam of the MRCPI in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which assesses your competence to apply your scientific knowledge in clinical practice.

The MRCPI OBG Part OSCE Exam

As mentioned above, the Clinical exam tests your skills in real-world scenarios, and it is divided into two parts:

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): The MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE is a practical exam, involving seven 10-minute stations, where candidates must interpret results, such as CTGs and imaging. Such activities need them to demonstrate specific technical skills and manage simulated clinical scenarios.

Key Skills: In the exam, the examiners test specific technical skills, like instrumental delivery on a mannequin, and soft skills, such as empathy, clarity, and professionalism.

Strategies to Ace MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE

The OBG Part 2 OSCE differs significantly from the MRCPI OBG Part 2 written exam, requiring technical skills aligned with the Irish standard. Therefore, here are some strategies to ace Part 2 OSCE:

  • Concentrate on Irish Guidelines: Rather than focusing on textbooks and multiple resources, you should concentrate on practising medicine according to the Irish National Guidelines and RCOG (UK) standards. While attending the exam, always assume you are in a fully resourced Irish teaching hospital.
  • Practice Time Management: While attending the exam, it is necessary to strategically split the time. Here’s an effective plan: spend 3 minutes on history, 3 minutes on examination/ investigation, and the last 4 minutes specifically on management and counselling.
  • Emphasise Communication: Communication is the key in this exam. You must communicate with the patient clearly; for example, never tell a patient that she has “oligohydramnios”; clearly communicate that there is less water around the baby than there is supposed to be.
  • Prioritise Safety: Ensure that you vocalise your safety checks, such as checking for allergies before prescribing medicine, offering a chaperone before an intimate examination, and ensuring the patient is stable before discussing discharge.
