Are you dreaming of a successful career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBG) in Ireland? Earning the prestigious MRCPI in OBG could be the right path to making that dream a reality. To achieve membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), you need to clear two important exams: the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written exam and the MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE.

Eligibility criteria for MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written exam

To be eligible for the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written exam, one of the following requirements must be met:

  • MRCOG Part 1 (note that MRCOG Part 1 exemption is not accepted)
  • RCPI Professional Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (awarded only from 2022 onwards)
  • MRCPI Part 1 in General Medicine or Paediatrics (achieved within the last six years)
  • MRACOG (Australia)
  • MRNZCOG (New Zealand)
  • FCOG (South Africa)
  • FCPS (obstetrics and gynaecology) from Pakistan
  • MRANZCOG
  • MMed (obstetrics and gynaecology) from Malaysia (2008 onwards)

Many candidates prefer to focus on MRCOG Part 1, as it aligns directly with obstetrics and gynaecology. Currently, MRCPI Part 1 in obstetrics and gynaecology is unavailable.

Post-registration training requirement

In addition to the qualifications mentioned above, candidates must also complete a minimum of 18 months of post-registration training in accredited positions. This training must include at least nine months in obstetrics and nine months in gynaecology (or a combination of both). The positions must be recognised by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at RCPI and be a minimum of six months in duration. This training must be completed by January for the March exam or by August for the September exam.

Eligibility for MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE

To qualify for the MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE, the following criteria apply:

  • Successful completion of the MRCPI OBG Part 1 Written exam.
  • The MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE must be attempted within three years of passing Part 1.
  • A candidate may not attempt the MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE more than six times.

Success in the MRCPI OBG exams requires not only theoretical knowledge but also strong clinical skills in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology.
