If you’re aiming to take the MRCPI OBG exams in 2024 or 2025, we will guide you through everything you need to know about MRCPI, including the MRCPI exam pattern and eligibility requirements.

MRCPI Exam Pattern

To achieve MRCPI in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, you must successfully complete two crucial exams: the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written and MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE. Both exams are conducted by RCPI.

MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written

This written exam is the first step toward achieving the prestigious RCPI membership. This exam contains questions designed to test knowledge in obstetrics and gynaecology, along with relevant aspects of other medical disciplines.

  • Mode of examination: Computer-based written test
  • Number of papers: 1
  • Frequency: Twice a year (March & September)
  • Number of questions: 100 SBAs in BOF format
  • Exam Duration: Three hours
  • Marking system: No negative marking

MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE

This is the final gateway to achieving your coveted RCPI membership. This Objective Structured Clinical Examination evaluates an aspirant’s knowledge and understanding of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as well as problem-solving, diagnosis, investigation, treatment, clinical, and communication skills.

  • Mode of examination: Objective Structured Clinical Exam + Clinical exam
  • Number of cases: 7 Short cases + 1 Long case
  • Duration: 10 minutes per station
Check Your Eligibility for MRCPI OBG Exam

Before sitting for the exam, you must have one of the following qualifications:

  • MRCOG Part I (exemption from MRCOG Part I is not accepted)
  • RCPI Professional Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (only awarded from 2022 onwards)
  • MRCPI Part I (General Medicine or Paediatrics) obtained within the last six years
  • MRACOG (Australia)
  • MRNZCOG (New Zealand)
  • FCOG (SA)
  • FCPS (O&G) (Pakistan)
  • MRANZCOG
  • MMed (O&G) (Malaysia) – 2008 onwards only
Additionally, ensure you have:
  • Completed 18 months of post-registration training in recognized posts, with nine months in Obstetrics and nine months in Gynaecology (or in combined posts)
  • Not exceeded 6 attempts
